When can a round trampoline mat be repaired?

A common question for many people with trampoline mat with holes or damage. The damage to trampoline mats can occur in many ways be it by wear and tear, weather conditions or age.
- Unfortunately, repairs are very limited and specific as to when they can be carried out.
- A mat can’t be repaired when there is a gaping hole of any sort be it in the middle or near the edge.
What I hope to help you with here is when you can repair a trampoline mat.
Different causes and types of holes and tears in trampoline mats:
- Hole in middle, any sized hole close to the middle of a trampoline mat is a short term hole and unlikely to last long with kids jumping on it before it becomes a big hole with the risk of kids falling through the hole to the ground creating a high risk of injury.
- Small impact hole if it is a small impact hole to the side of the mat and no more than the size of a 10c piece then you can try a temporary patch and sew by hand into position. This too really shouldn’t be relied on to last a very long time.
- Burn small hole - Small ember burns off to the edges is possibly the best kind of damage to your trampoline mat. The ember will have burnt through and on the way melted the threads together. The melted edges are what protect the mat from any fraying or further damage. It can last a very long time in this state without any repair needed – I have had personal experience of this. (I would caution a burn in the middle of the mat is unlikely to last as one to the edge)
- Long burn mark caused by a hot sparkler or similar. Even if like the above scenario the edge of the burn is melted due to it being an elongated burn / this type of burn it will not hold for long and the trampoline really shouldn’t be used.
- Pulled thread in the mat – this can occur from having other objects on the trampoline eg bikes or scooters etc when a thread is pulled into a loop it sometimes can be eased back into position by manipulating it with your fingers. Try to pull it so the loop at least ends up on the underside of the trampoline mat rather than the top where it could catch on fingers or toes. (this is a very rare problem – maybe seen 2 cases in 10 years)
- Grazed mat – If a some of the threads have been compromised from grazing, most commonly by a heavy object landing on an angle on the mat – a scooter, bike or a medium weight branch can cause similar damage, then you should get some reasonable life out of your mat without any need to repair. We recommend marking around the perimeter of the graze with a paint pen or even white-out marker – so if there is any change to the damage size you will be able to detect it easy enough – however, if you do have any doubt about the stability of it then please arrange for replacement as soon as possible.
- Broken D ring – sometimes with overload impact on the mat close to the edge of the mat a spring D ring may turn in the webbing and open up allowing for the spring to come loose. When this occurs, it is easy enough to get a replacement and fit it. You will need to use vice grips/pliers either side of the D piece once you have the replacement to open it and then thread it through the webbing loop on the mat.
- Stitching coming undone – If stitching around the edge of the mat starts to come undone it will compromise the security of the webbing loops for the D rings. Best to remove the mat, to do this so that the mat is put back later in the same place with the same springs, remove the spring and leave them in the frame hole, mark the mat and the frame where position one is so that you know where to line the hooks up with the first correct spring.
- Fraying mat at edges – simply replace the mat, this has a higher probability of happening late in the life of the mat. The threads become brittle, so fraying can be an early indicator to get a new mat.
