Why athletes prefer rectangle trampolines over round

When it comes to a preference of round or rectangle trampoline based on an in-house Instagram survey we found from 67 respondents only three said they preferred a round trampoline.

Round trampolines are seen to be more like a toy for younger kids than a serious piece of sporting equipment for the teens who view themselves as athletes.

The sports that are trained for using trampolines and featured strongly in the survey were parkour, free running, snowboarding, gymnastics and trampolining.

A resounding 90% were tween and teen male. Mostly Australian but a strong mix of US, German, UK and Swedish responders too.

The question “Round or rectangle? What do you prefer and why?” was asked because we saw on Instagram many kids had round trampolines but yet so much hype and attention when using a friends rectangle or visiting a trampoline park,

Also to be clear we are referring to garden trampolines for both round and rectangle or Gtramp as is the term among the kids.

There were a few reasons and times when a round trampoline can be better than a round as stated by this older demographic of athletes.

  •  ideal for little kids who just want to jump as bounce more predictable
  • feels safer when a lot of kids are on together
  • better for twisting tricks as it doesn’t matter which way you land

Why athletes prefer a rectangle trampoline over round

  • Prepares you for Olympics and competitions as all competition tramps and spring floors are rectangle
  • Bouncier by far; spring length, trampoline width, frame strength, and mat all contribute to this by opinion and fact.
  • Bouncier all over; middle, and ends to get maximum height
  • Only rectangles come with variable mat options for higher bounce
  • Can do combos better and more interesting and harder combos as you have the length to put them together in a line, so when you go on a spring floor or ground you are already going straight
  • Better for bouncing and flipping on your own – kabooms and codys
  • Double bouncing is easier and better, perfect for doubles and triples,
  • Less scary when attempting new tricks because you know you have more height and will be less likely to neck yourself
  • Yet to be a brand whose round trampoline is better than their rectangle, rectangle of any brand is better than their round
  • Feels safer
  • Easier to do “no bounce” tricks
  • Harder to fall off a rectangle without a net than off a round with no net,
  • Fall into a round net more than a rectangle, some reason more likely to fall to the side on a round trampoline. (as the writer of this I don’t fully understand why this might be the case but it was mentioned more than once in the survey).
