Top 3 things, kids look for when choosing a trampoline

"Top 3 things kids in Australia look for when choosing a trampoline to buy

This is a very short article to address the one thing kids resoundingly declare as the number one thing they look for in a trampoline and that is bounce. (based on a survey of our Instagram followers who are mainly male and tramp flippers, or athletes in snowboarding, parkour, free running, diving, gymnastics and trampolining).

What is the number 1 most important thing kids want their trampoline to do?

It’s all about the bounce no trouble

  • Bounce is important for height; with height, they can more safety achieve flips without fear of “necking”.
  • Bounce will also enable them to have greater enjoyment as a trampoline that has great bounce will take less energy to achieve the height and therefore the kids will stay out bouncing contentedly for longer.
  • Be aware that a user’s weight and skill has a large bearing on the bounce of a trampoline.
  • You really want your kids to be getting a great bounce from their trampoline out of the box and then even more as they get heavier and better skilled over time. (choosing a trampoline size and shape carefully is important)

  • This may surprise many adults as we know kids do take risks on the trampoline. But after chatting with a lot they tell me that when they do feel safer they will only then attempt harder tricks.
  • A good strong net is important, ensure it is one that is UV stabilised, typically cheap trampolines have a low-grade UV capacity and many kids have fallen through them.
  • Padding should be of a high and durable grade
  • A strong thick frame gives the overall structure strength that can be felt when comparing trampolines.
  • Ironically kids will treat very safe trampolines that don’t have great bounce with contempt to try to achieve a better bounce –so a trampoline with a good bounce really should be the primary focus.
  • Meeting and exceeding Australian safety standards is a sure sign of a quality trampoline; due to the certification being the toughest in the world.

The third factor is space

  • a large area for kids to feel they are not restricted and have room to extend their flips and routines into is important.
  • Kids that will choose space over bounce are cheerleaders who don’t require great height. We had no cheerleaders respond in this survey but it is something I am very aware of.
“A trampoline without bounce, is simply a cage to put kids in” was feedback from one young lad !

Younger kids?

Younger kids are best kept to a trampoline with low bounce until they develop basic skills, but typically a trampoline will become a trampoline with bounce to little kids as they grow and get heavier. Taking a long-term view when deciding on the size trampoline you buy should really apply so you do want to choose a size with age of 8-10yo so in mind more so than the existing 5-year-old.
