Round vs Rectangle Trampolines

Round Trampoline VS Rectangle Trampoline

Choosing the perfect trampoline depends on many factors, including the age of your kids, the activities that they do on the trampoline and the shape of your yard space and to a large degree your budget too.

Both round and rectangle trampolines can be excellent choices, depending on your needs. Comparing both round and rectangle trampolines with what your families needs are, will assist you in choosing the right trampoline for your family.

Why buy a round trampoline?

  • Round trampolines have the great advantage of typically being cheaper. They are easier to design and require less metal for their construction, which allows for lower prices.

  • They also come in very small sizes, with mini trampolines being as small as 1.3 m wide. This allows you to position them even on a medium-sized balcony or inside a room.

  • Larger round models are great for bigger groups of kids who want to play together.

  • The bounce is a more even experience for all users so safer for little kids.

round-and-rectangle-trampoline  Things to consider when buying a round trampoline:

  • Typically round trampolines have thinner metal frames than the rectangle trampolines and for this reason, they are also a cause for concern.
  • If thick enough steel isn't used then the trampoline springs can cut through the thin metal.
  • Round trampolines tend to tip over, blow away and rust through more easily.
  • Department stores first brought round trampolines out as toys with metal as thin as 1.2mm.
  • GeeTramp and Vuly Lift 2 use 2mm thick steel (1.5mm on 8ft and 10ft). More information about frames can be found here
  • The bounce gets more difficult the bigger the trampoline diameter as all springs need to be activated to create enough energy for jumping.
  • The greater the diameter the further the users body weight has to travel to the springs.
  • Consider if inside or outside net is what you want. A good article to go over the differences can be found here.
  • Padding materials - a good article can be found here about padding.
  • Access to spare parts for your brand of trampoline.
  • Department stores consider their product disposable so typically; either none or very limited supply of parts; often rendering a trampoline to waste for the smallest of damage including a hole in the jumping mat. (each brand/ factory makes to slightly different sizes, fittings etc so no such generic fitting of parts -frames, mats, pads etc. across brands)

Why buy a rectangle trampoline?

  • Rectangle trampolines are ideal for all who do gymnastics, parkour, free running, dancing or perform cheerleading routines.
  • Rectangular trampolines offer a better bounce. This is because the width is narrower than on, for example, an 8x12ft trampoline compared to 12ft round and therefore less weight is needed to compress and activate the springs.
  • Easier to do flips and tricks on and can clear neck better younger on a rectangle than on round.
  • If kids are using their trampoline as their sports equipment, it is a good idea to invest in a high-quality rectangular one with enough floor-length area to allow them to perform their routines.
  • For both round and rectangular trampolines, padding and safety nets are important. Make sure your child is protected by getting a trampoline with thick padding and a net that does not tear.
  • When you do buy a quality trampoline with thick steel framework it will outlast a round one by many years.
  • Unfit / reluctant jumpers will use a rectangle trampoline with enhanced bounce more than a round trampoline.

Things to consider when buying a rectangle trampoline

  • If the bounce is what you are after for the kids then the rectangle will deliver better than an equivalent sized round trampoline.
  • Little kids in particular under 6 tend to spend a lot of time running on a trampoline and honestly running around, a round trampoline is safer to watch than watching them running up and down a rectangle.
  • The double bounce is a big plus as well as a big negative on the rectangle trampolines and more so when there are three users are on the trampoline together. Although recommended for only one child at a time on any trampoline we all know otherwise happens. Be aware it is the smallest person on the trampoline that is most likely to be injured out of the three.

Both round and rectangle trampolines are safe and great fun to use when used sensibly, so it is a matter of choosing the one that matches your child's activities, their weight, available space, and your budget.
