Repair Split Seam on Trampoline Padding

Trampolines are common to many backyards, providing hours of entertainment for kids and adults alike. However, over time the trampoline padding can become worn or damaged, causing safety concerns. Instead of replacing the entire trampoline, repairing the padding canbe a cost-effective and practical solution. Sewing and repairing the padding may seem a little daunting, but with a few easy tips and tricks, it can be done in no time. Here are some helpful tips to keep your family trampoline safe:

  • Choose a warm day to work on the repair project. The heat will soften the padding, making it easier to work with and manipulate.
  • Use a long, thick needle to ensure that it can penetrate through the padding and create a sturdy seam. Additionally, use commercial grade thread, as it is more durable and will withstand the elements.
  • Protect your fingers by using a thimble. If you don't have a thimble, a texta lid can be used as a makeshift alternative. The padding can be tough to push a needle through, and a thimble will prevent any potential injuries to your fingers.
  • Instead of making new holes in the padding, it's easier to reuse the previous sewn holes. This will save time and reduce the risk of creating unnecessary holes in the padding.

Follow these tips to ensure a successful and long-lasting repair:

  • Assess the extent of the damage. Before beginning any repair work, it's essential to identify the damaged areas and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Ensure you have good access - this might mean undoing the net securing points or removing some springs to have clear access to sew
  • Clean the damaged area thoroughly. Use a damp cloth to remove any dirt, cobwebs, debris or mildew. Allow the area to dry completely before proceeding.
  • Thread the needle and knot the end. Begin sewing from the underside of the padding, using a straight stitch, and working your way towards the damaged area.
  • Use a backstitch to secure the thread at the beginning and end of the seam. This will ensure that the thread doesn't unravel, creating a more durable seam.
  • Inspect the repair to ensure it's secure and safe to use.

Here are some tips to help prevent damage to your trampoline padding seams

  • Regularly inspect your trampoline. A visual inspection of the padding and seams should be performed periodically to check for any signs of wear and tear. This will allow you to address any issues before they become more severe and potentially dangerous.
  • Keep your trampoline clean. Regularly cleaning the trampoline padding will help to remove any dirt, and debris, that may cause damage to the seams. Use water only and a soft-bristled brush to scrub the padding gently.
  • Limit the weight and number of users standing on the padding.
  • Weight either side of a seam will cause it to tear - eg feet standing directly either side of a seam can put unnecessary strain on the padding seams, causing damage over time.

By following these tips, you can help prevent damage to your trampoline padding seams and ensure that it remains safe and enjoyable for years to come. A reminder that as soon as you see some damage the faster you repair it the less time it will take. "A stitch in time saves nine"
