What to know when preparing for an in-ground Trampoline

Read, before you commit to an in-ground trampoline.

For an in-ground trampoline, the customer organises the preparation of the hole and installation independently of the trampoline purchase.

We regularly advise customers to contact a local landscape gardener for local knowledge of soils and if the local council requires permits.

  • Depending on your yard access you could contact a small earth mover eg a local small size backhoe operator will make short work of the earthworks although many are happy to dig their hole by hand.
  • You need to allow some form of air movement under the trampoline when going in ground because when the pads are on the trampoline, the underneath section becomes relatively sealed and a there is a noticeable decrease in the bounce
  • to provide air flow you could either raise the trampoline above ground say 75-100mm to provide an air gap (to do this just don’t dig as deep) or use some other means like a large vent hose arrangement
  • The trampoline from us will come with its legs, we recommend you use these and put the frame and legs assembled straight in the hole, easy to elevate the frame above the retaining wall for the air flow mentioned above.
  • Others have removed the legs and mounted the top frame directly onto a retaining wall, when jumping there are large forces on the side rails so if you go this way the retaining wall needs to be very strong. (This was the usual way before pads were common with a trampoline so airflow was not an issue)
  • If using the existing legs you need to provide some form of separation from direct contact with dirt to prevent corrosion, some soils especially at deeper levels can be highly acidic or have high levels of salt minerals, the separator could be in the form of a rubber section on a layer of clean screenings
  • The hole usually needs some form of drainage eg an Aggie pipe to stormwater or a drainage pump
  • If doing a retaining wall best to have the trampoline onsite before going beyond the point of no return and cementing any posts in place. We have had a customer assemble the frame and cement the legs in only to find they had the frame assembled incorrectly which they learnt when they went to put the jumping mat on.

The reward for your effort when complete is an in ground trampoline that does look pretty neat and access is so easy. If you wish to know more or 3 ways an in-ground trampoline can be installed just scroll down for more relevant articles.
